Boy was it a Monday....

I only slept about four hours last night

I administered a five hour long end of course English I exam

I've had a headache since about 3:00 that just won't seem to go away

I had to do the laundry that I failed to do this weekend

I didn't get to go workout like I had planned

And I'm now in bed ready for some much needed sleep!

Good night!

The end of a season...

As I write this post I am watching my second college basketball game of the day.  It is the elite eight round and my team, Duke, is still in!! *happy dance* They, however don't play until tomorrow.  That will be the game deciding whether they make it to the final four and they eventually (hopefully) the championship game!

This all makes me very excited and sad at the same time.  You see, for the past few months I have looked forward to watching pretty much any college basketball game I could find! What am I going to do with no college basketball :/  I know it sounds crazy, but I go through the same thing when college football ends.

I usually count down the days until these two sports start up again.  I also like baseball, but it doesn't quite grab my attention as much as football and basketball.  For instance, this morning I knew the Texas Tech spring game was being held.  I wasn't able to go watch it live but you can bet I was watching it in my pajamas this morning!  I get such a rush out of the competition and it makes me excited for the upcoming season!

This got me to thinking about the "seasons" we have in school.  We have the yay first of the year, the only a few more weeks until Christmas, the how long until spring break, and then the countdown to summer.  After a long year there is nothing I look more forward to then the countdown to summer.  This is the time of year when students are always crazy busy, testing takes over schools, and teachers are just trying to survive until the end of the week for a rest on the weekend.

This would also be the point in the "season" where we know our sport is getting ready to end.  Just as with sports, this is a bitter sweet time for me.  I'm excited for a nice break but also sad to say bye to the seniors I have know since they were sophomores.  Next year will be even harder because I would have know them from the time they were freshman.  I know they will be gradiating and winning that "championship" which is great but at the same time, the following year they won't be walking the halls they have come to know over the past four years...

Getting to see my team win a championship is amazing but my proudest moment is watching my kids walk across that stage.  Not only that, but continuing to keep up with them as they grow and make their dreams come true!  The exciting things about seasons is that although there is an end, there will always be another beginning...

Busy but blessed...

Today has been a great day!!! Although I have been busy, I am still able to meet up at a friend's house for some dinner.  Tomorrow, however, is a different story...

My day will start off with some Starbucks...I only get it on Friday's because if not I will go broke lol.  I will then arrive at school at around 7 am.  I will have morning duty until 7:45 and then I will meet with the other Spanish teachers to discuss how our classes are going.  From 8:30 to 3:35 will be teaching as usual.

At 3:35 I will shoo my kids out the door and fight the crowds of high school students to go to the front of the school to sell prom tickets...I'm BEYOND ready for prom to be over (yay for being a prom sponsor).  Around 4:00 I will head out to the track to watch a track meet where many of my students will be competing.  I love going to track meets so I don't mind this at all :)

After the track meet, or during depends on the time, I will head over to the baseball fields to watch some of my students play.  This will be the first game I get to watch all year so I am very excited about this as well!!

I usually don't get to stay after school this long because of Raider.  I'm usually rushing home to let him out after a long day all alone at home.  What he doesn't know is that my parents will be coming over to help with my lawn.  They will be arriving at my house Friday afternoon so Raider will have some good grandparent time before I get home.  I'm pretty sure he loves them more than he loves me!

Although it will be a very busy day, I am excited to be able to support my students.  I have learned that if I am there to support them when they are doing something they love, they return the favor.  Plus, who wouldn't enjoy a warm spring day spent outside watching a track meet or some baseball.  I will, however, be sleeping very well tomorrow night!

P.S.  Expect my post tomorrow to be a little short because when I get home I will probably exhausted lol!

Best dog ever...

Dear Raider,

I just wanted to day thank you for being the best dog ever!! You patiently wait for me everyday and always act so excited when I arrive.  Even when I'm having a bad day, you sit right next to me and cuddle as if to say everything is going to be ok! You are so incredibly full of life and I love watching you run free in the yard.

You are definitely one of the weirdest dogs I know! What other dog loves wearing clothes and getting dried off by the blow dryer??? As I get ready in the morning you eagerly await while I finish blow drying my hair so that I can blow dry you a bit. You are just as patient waiting for your sweaters to get out of the dryer. Once I pull them out you are already jumping to get them on.

I can't imagine my life without you and I thank God for blessing me with you! You are my protector, my best friend, and most of all the best dog a girl could ever ask for!

I, I, I...

This post was borrowed from another blogger's idea! Thank you!

I am a learner and a teacher.

I keep up with my favorite sports s teams like the players were my friends.

I wish I could fly!!!

I love the sound of rain on a tin roof.

I dance all the time! Whether it's shaking my head and shoulders or my whole body, I am constantly dancing to some beat in my head.

I sing even if I sounds bad...I love singing and I do it whole-heartedly.

I think I may be a tad bit obsessed with my dog 🐶

I really need to workout...

I need o be content and greatful for what I have.

I should probably be getting ready for bed right now.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me Philipians 4:13

I like the way it feels when my mom plays with my hair when I'm not feeling well.

I make some killer sour cream green chili chicken enchiladas!!

I always try to be the person God wants me to be!

Half-way asleep...

Well, it was the Monday after Spring Break and my kids were amazing today!! Sadly, last night my body did not want to cooperate with my comfy pillow and bed so I got a total of about four hours of sleep.

First day after Soring Break + excited kids + no caffeine = one tired, yet blessed, teacher

Good night!

Bye bye, Spring Break...

Well, tomorrow it's back to my regular schedule. Spring Break 2015 was great!!! I worked on some house projects, did some shopping, visited friends and family, and got some much needed sleep! I can say, however, that I am ready to tackle these last weeks of school.  I'm pretty sure they are going to fly by! The spring semester always does. My days will be filled with teaching, family, friends, baseball games, softball games, track meets, bible studies, walks with Raider, and maybe some sleep lol!!  I absolutely love my job and can't wait to see my kiddos tomorrow...just wish it wasn't so early.  The end of the school year will be here before you know it so make everyday worth it!!!

I did it...

I did it!!!! I checked off one of the things on my New Years resolution list! This is something that I have struggled with for sometime but this spring break was the perfect time to do its!

I went and saw a movie by myself! I know that doesn't sound like much of an accomplishment but if you have never been alone then it can be a little nerve racking.  I am single and although I have a lot of friends, I don't want to have to rely on them to go do something as simple as watch a movie. I knew it was the perfect time because Alamo Drafthouse was letting teachers watch movies for free before 6 during the week of spring break.  So, not only did I check something off of my list but I did it for free (besides the popcorn :) of course).

One of my next to-do's on my New Years resolution list is to eat at a restaurant by myself.  I think this will be harder than the movie.  I am very social but it was easy to go and sit in a quite movie theatre and watch a movie.  I feel like I will have to take a book with me or something when I go out to eat just to keep me busy lol! If not I may just start talking to myself!

However small or large my accomplishments, I take them on day at a time.  I have been thinking about going to the movies alone for years and I'm glad I finally did it!

Let the madness begin...

Soooooo, I ended up not crossing something off of my New Years resolution list because I had some things that really NEEDED to be done so I'm going to try again tomorrow!!!

In other news MARCH MADNESS has started and I am so excited!!! It is one of my favorite times of the year!! And, this is pretty much how it's going so far...

Pretty much lol! Happy March Madness!!!

Hopefully I can sleep tonight...

Today was the last day of my mom staying with me.  We had breakfast, played with Raider outside, watched some tv and then ate lunch.

After that, it was time to drive her home.  I love spending time with her and even if I am 29 and lI've only an hour and a half away I still get a little teary-eyed when leavingu parents house.

The drive back was pretty quiet, except for me singing to my music, which Raider didn't really enjoy. We walked inside and it just felt different. For some reason when my mom is here there is always something to do!

Raider and I decided to watch some tv...and in the process we fell asleep.  We just woke up not too long ago so we'll see how tonight goes. Hopefully I'll be able to sleep a bit because tomorrow I am crossing a New Years resolution off of my list!!!

Spring Break day 2...

The majority of yesterday was spent paining so today was a relaxing day 😄. My mom came to stay with me for a couple of days during my Spring Break and I'm sad she leaves tomorrow. Her last day here we did a few of our favorite things together.

The day started off with being lazy and sleeping in.  We then ate some homemade pancakes (the best!) and got ready to tackle the day.

We did some shopping, found some great deals (always happens with mom), got some gifts for a shower on Saturday, and got some Bahama Bucks before heading home!

Then, we had the best part of our day, a nap! It was cloudy, rainy, and cool...the perfect weather for a quick pick-me-up nap!! After the nap we tried out a new Mexican (well, new for us) that was AMAZING!!!

Now, we are just sitting at home. Mom is working on a Sudoku and I'm listening to the TV.  It doesn't sound like a very exciting day but to me it was! I love the days where it is just my mom and I!! We always have the best time!!

Just a few words that have come to my mind throughout the day today...

Sunday's are usually special but today I got to go to church with my parents, which doesn't happen very often because I live about an hour and a half away. I love the feeling of going back to your "home church" and seeing all the familiar faces that you grew up with! Hope all of you have a wonderful week!!

Teaching English...

One day a week I teach an adult ESL class as a grant program at our school.  I was presented with the opportunity about a month ago and tonight was my first time alone.  At first I wasn't sure how well I was going to do.  One, I'm used to teaching high school students and second, I'm used to teaching Spanish not English.

The reason I wanted to start doing this is because I have helped with my church before and loved it! We would teach English by reading the bible.  I knew I wouldn't be using a bible this time so I tried to think of different resources that I would use to help these adults learn to speak English.  I started with an introduction of who they were.  This helps them learn basic words used everyday plus it helps me get to know them a little bit better.  First they answer the questions about themselves and then they read it out loud to me.

This went really well, but the best part of the night was just talking.  I talked to them in English and had them speak back to me in English.  Some of them do great and others are still struggling with simple words, but that's why I'm here, right??? Once the conversation started, it lasted for almost thirty minutes!  We mostly talked about our jobs and families but they were talking in almost all English.

I started to reflect on my own classroom and how I was basically trying to do the same thing, but in Spanish.  But, there was a problem.  I was getting some great responses from these adults but couldn't get the same kind of responses from my students.  This definitely proved a point that I was tying to overlook.  I have been trying to teach my students Spanish but just by having them memorize vocabulary. I have just proved to myself that, obviously, that doesn't work.  I need more conversation in my classroom.  I wish it wasn't already so late in the year but I'm making a commitment for next year to be my best year yet.

I want to be able to see my students really GROW in their Spanish from year to year.  As a Spanish teacher, we don't really have to prove to anyone or a test that we are good teachers.  I thought I was doing OK at least but I now feel like I have really failed my kids.  I want to prove to MYSELF that I am doing what is best for my students!

I love teaching Spanish and I know I will be doing it for a while.  I'm excited about starting research for my new journey next year but I feel bad for the students I have had for the past five years.  I know I can't doing anything about that now, but I can help my future Spanish students!

I can already tell I'm going to have a very busy Spring Break because I already have ideas running through my head.  It's crazy how all of this came to be just by teaching an adult ESL class...

I found this quote and I'm going to try to live by it not only in my teaching, but in my life in general!

Creative minds...

Do you ever have one of those days where nothing sounds quite right so you end up doing something completely different??? Well, today was my day!

Today, we were supposed to play our normal game of trashketball to review for our vocabulary quiz.  After looking over the quiz, I decided I didn't want my kids to have to suffer through that! Just looking at it made me miserable....so I decided to scratch that idea.

Instead, I had students draw and lable pictures to help review for a quiz I, later, made.  They were ecstatic! Who knew "big kids" could be so excited about drawing and coloring.  There were a few who immediately started to complain that they couldn't draw or had no artistic ability whatsoever. I told them to "be creative" and it would work.

Creative they were!! I feel like when kids get to be creative these walls that they have up around them get to come down for a second and you get to really know them! They also don't worry about being too "weird" around their friends because they are all having fun! This is just what I needed as a pick-me-up in the middle of the week before spring break.

I sometimes get caught up in trying to teach everything that I don't let my students teach me a thing or two.  Today my students taught, kind of reminded, me that inside every grown up or older kid there is a child whose imagination is just waiting to burst out when given the opportunity!

Food days...

Who knew two words could have so much power? As a student in a Spanish class, my two favorite words to hear were always food day! We would pick a food, make or buy it, and then bring it to school to share with the class.  It was the best thing EVER!!!

Well, now that I am the teacher, I have a love/hate relationship with the day.  I never knew how much of a pain it could be!  Here are a few things I did not even think about as a student on food days:

1) Where is the food going to be stored until our class period gets to eat?
2) How is all of this food that needs to be refrigerated going to fit in the refrigerator?
3) How are we going to heat up all this food?
4) Where is all of the trash going to go?
5) What if people forget to pick up their dishes after school? (This is probably the worst!!)
6) When does the classroom begin to smell normal again?

After many trials, I have actually gotten pretty good at the whole food day as a teacher! Each time we have one it gets better and better.  I have found a way to almost tame the craziness of the day.  It's not perfect, but pretty darn good! I have also learned to just sit and enjoy the yummy food my students have brought to share.

Even if it isn't my favorite day, I know my students love it and work hard to keep it! And, if I can combine eating food with learning then why not!

Sunday naps...

Ever since I can remember, Sunday was always family nap day.  First we would all go to church, then have a big meal. It was always understood that after lunch we would sit around and watch a movie, but during the movie we all ended up falling asleep.  It was the most relaxing time of the week! There were times where we had birthday parties or wedding/baby showers to go to but for the most part, this is how our Sunday's were spent.

As I grew older, I decided to keep the "tradition" going. College was a little harder, but I learned not to leave my homework to Sunday's because when the homework was done I was able to nap!  After college, my routine of napping was much easier.  I usually have lunch with some friends after church and then me and Raider cuddle up on the couch for our nap :) I'm pretty sure he enjoys it just as much as I do! Lol!

Even after the busiest of weeks I always have something to look forward to...my Sunday naps.

I ❤️ Saturday...

Had a great Saturday, even if it wasn't extremely eventful. Sometimes that's best!

It started out by picking up my bountiful basket full of yummy fruits and veggies. Then, it was time for Raider's walk.  It was a short walk, mostly because it was so cold.  That pesky wind just wouldn't let up! After doing some chores at home, I took Raider to a dog bakery called Three Dog Bakery.  I looks like a normal bakery but it's for dogs! Raider was in heaven!!! Let's just say I spent more than I needed too lol.

After that, we spent most of the day at home. I watched some basketball and graded papers while Raider played outside and slept (I think he got the better end of the deal). The big game I was waiting for was UNC vs. Duke. I'm a HUGE Duke fan and this is one of the biggest rivalries in all of college sports! There were a couple of times that I thought I was going to have a heartattack but Duke pulled off the win! I will be going to sleep a happy fan ☺️

I love weekends where I don't have any real plans.  They are far and inbetween but I take advantage of them when they do come along!

Amen it's Friday...

Well, I can easily say this was one of the longest days I've had in a while!!! I know it's only superstition but I'm pretty sure our students go a little crazy when there is a full moon.
Just a few strange things that's happened today...

1) I found hot Cheetos thrown randomly in different places throughout the school

2) At lunch a student "forgot" to put water in her cup of noodles and the cafeteria smelled like smoke for longer than just a little bit.

3) My students had about a five minute conversation on the easiest way to write an upside down question mark (they came up with some pretty nifty ideas...)

4) Some students sat at the principals table at lunch.  This may not seem weird but the principals sit at the exact same table every single day and when they went to do something the students just sat there, even when the principals returned. They ended up just sanding for the rest of lunch.  (yay for lunch duty)

5) I had a student want to stay after school on a Friday to re-do a quiz.  I have been trying to get this student to come in for the past two weeks and he chooses today...

I'm just glad the week is over and I get to spend my Friday night watching Netflix, cuddling with Raider, and eating cookies and cream ice cream! Amen it's Friday...

They remember...

So, throughout my day I have been thinking about what I was going to write about tonight. After thinking about it for a while I knew the perfect thing!

This year I stated my fifth year of teaching total, but my third year teaching at my current school. When I first started, I had mostly sophomores which are now seniors.  It is crazy how much they have grown and matured (well, most of them lol)! They often come by my classroom to visit me and at first I thought it was just to get out of class. Well, sometimes it is and sometimes they say they just miss being in my class.

I find it rather ironic...this is the kid who always said I was too mean for not letting him play on his phone or the girl who used to roll her eyes at me when I got her in trouble for talking too loud. Sure I have those kids who were awesome in my class but it's the ones who I thought hated my class that I am surprised by.

What surprises me the most is the things they remember! Not necessarily what they remember about the subject material, but things that happened in class and the little things I share about my life with them. At least once a day a former student comes and talks to me about Raider, or about how my favorite team is doing at the time.  Sometimes they will show up with my favorite Starbucks/Sonic drink, donut holes, or chocolate. It's like they know me so well! Lol! Many times they will ask about what I'm teaching that day and will remember something that happened when I taught the same thing when they were in my class.

When this first started happening, I used to find it annoying.  Now I see it as an opportunity to "keep up" with my kids who I don't see as often as I used to.  I do have those students who probably stay a little longer than they should but I also have those that just wave through the window to say hi! However long or short the visit, I enjoy and cherish it! For some of thses students, this will be the last year I see them roaming these halls. For others, they still have a few years. Either way, I will always be amazed at the things they remember.

Here goes nothin...

Well, I'm pretty new to this whole blogging thing...and when I say pretty new I mean this is the first one I've ever done! One of my best friends encouraged me to participate in the slice of life 31 day challenge and here I am.  Let me start out by telling you a bit about myself...

I'm a small town girl raised in the panhandle of TEXAS surrounded by cotton fields and tumble weeds.  I have since moved to a city in west TEXAS (can you tell I love my state) where I teach high school Spanish to some of the best students a teacher could ask for. I am the youngest in a family of  six, which includes my dad, my mom, three sisters and two brothers.  I am also the worlds best auntie to fourteen (yes, I said fourteen) nices and nephews! In my free time I love to spend time with my family, watch Netflix, read, shop, play with my dog Raider, and watch sports!

I am a HUGE sports fanatic! Whether it's little league, high school, college, or pro I'll be there watching it live or or screaming at my TV in my living room. I definitely have my favorite teams but I can get into almost any football, basketball, or baseball game going on.

If I'm not watch sports, I'm watching Netflix! First of all, whoever invented it is a genius! The thing I love the most about Netflix is the amount of variety offered. I find random TV shows and movies that I never even imagined watching. A great example of this is what I am watching as I type.  Arrow has become one of my new obsessions! My dog, on the other hand doesn't seem too impressed.

Raider is my baby and the joy of my life (pictures to come)! I got him for Valentine's Day in 2013 and my love for him has done nothing but grow from that day forward.  He is a maltese-poodle mix that is spoiled rotten! He loves Doritos, squeaky toys, taking long naps, walks at the park, and clothes. I know some people have to force their dogs to wear clothes but Raider loves them! When he sees me get one of his shirts or sweaters he starts wildy dancing around and jumping. Weird, I know but what can I say! Like owner like pet lol!

That's me in a nut shell! I look forward to not only sharing my thoughts and experiences but reading and enjoying what others are sharing from all over!

Lots of love, a teacher and her pup ❤️
